Ontario Breaks Ground on New Poultry Research Centre

Ontario has started construction on the new Ontario Poultry Research Centre in Elora, backed by more than C$24 million in provincial investment through Agricultural Research and Innovation Ontario. The facility is expected to support more than 1,500 chicken and turkey producers and about 500 egg and pullet farmers. It will include dedicated research areas for layers, pullets, broilers and hatcheries, along with specialized and commercial scale research wings.

Research will focus on poultry health and welfare, nutrition, genetics, biosecurity, food safety, production costs and emerging technologies. The project is being developed with Ontario’s poultry industry boards and the University of Guelph, and is expected to be completed by summer 2028, supporting more than 220 construction jobs along the way. For Ontario’s poultry sector, the centre is intended to expand research capacity and help turn research into practical improvements in productivity, disease prevention and farm resilience.
