Canada and China Extend Agricultural Trade Access Through 2028

Canada and China announced on November 4, 2026, that they had agreed to extend favorable market access for Canadian canola meal, peas, lobster and crab through the end of 2028.
The extension was reached through the Canada–China Joint Economic and Trade Commission in Beijing. It continues measures introduced earlier in 2026 that suspended additional Chinese tariffs on the covered products. Those arrangements had previously been scheduled to expire at the end of this year.
The decision is significant for Canadian agricultural producers, exporters and seafood harvesters because it reduces near-term uncertainty over access to a major export destination. It also provides greater predictability for businesses involved in grain handling, processing and international trade.
Canada will maintain corresponding tariff-remission measures for certain Chinese steel and aluminum products. Officials described the extension as part of broader efforts to strengthen bilateral trade, although future export growth remains a government objective rather than a guaranteed outcome.
