Over two years, the funding will support characterization and sequencing of major crop collections, while advanced technologies including artificial intelligence will be used to identify potentially valuable genetic traits and gaps in U.S. collections. USDA is also expanding its agreement with the Department of Justice aimed at strengthening competition in agricultural input markets, with an emphasis on seeds.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">For farmers and the seed sector, the significance is mainly long term. Public germplasm provides the genetic material that researchers and plant breeders use to develop new crop varieties. USDA says better genetic information should help researchers respond more quickly to emerging pests and diseases and strengthen domestic agricultural resources.
